abode update and a giveaway

top o' the morning to you all!  i thought i would give y'all a house update, and then reward you for reading about that with a giveaway.  that's fair, right??  i mean, it's buying a house, it might get a little boring.  and, feel free to scoot on down to the giveaway part at the end!  thanks everyone for keeping tabs on our journey, and i swear this grief better end with a cute "we've moved" card...that's all i gotta say.  so here's the jam.

so i told you guys on friday that we had been waiting no less than five days, or 'all week' if you consider just the work week, or approximately 120 hours, to hear back from the seller on our offer that we submitted the previous monday.  not that we were counting.  we didn't hear boo from them until this past monday...promptly after they received a second offer.  now - this offer was lower than ours, so wouldn't you think that they would say something along the lines of, "we have a higher offer on the table and we owe them the courtesy of moving forward as they have been waiting patiently (or not so...) for a week; kindly get lost."  that's what would make sense to a rational individual i believe.  a pertinent detail to mention is that we are trying to purchase a bank-owned property.  quite a different story from buying from an individual, who is probably for the most part a fair, level-headed, sane person - or at least you can hope they've hired an agent who is even if they're not.

as you can probably surmise, that is not what happened.  the bank told the new buyers on the scene that there was a higher offer on the table, and that they should raise their offer if they want the house - because they now have the chance to outbid us and walk away with the house. even though their offer came in a week after ours.  and we never even got the courtesy of a counter offer, or heck, acknowledgement that we were first in line from the bank.  and then we, in turn, were told the same thing - to raise our offer, even though we were the higher bidder - to in effect "win" the house.  the best and final offers from both parties are due today at 5:00 p.m.

i tried to use restraint in how i conveyed this story, but i can tell you right now i was TICKED.  majorly, severely, ticked.  it just made me so mad, how we are suddenly players in this dirty game and have to cave to their ridiculous game rules, just because they say so.  it also made me sad for the world we live in, because i want to believe that people (even banks...that are run by people) will act honorably and you can trust that.  but i guess in this case, it comes down to how much money they can squeeze out of us.

big sigh.  i'll let you all know how it goes, and hopefully i'll have good news to share later this week!  here's hoping anyway.

now that y'all muddled through that so nicely - let's do a giveaway!!!  yeah!  first though, i need to share with you the notecards that mary clare received from the last giveaway back in november.  yes, that was a while ago - but there was christmas in there and i swear i had to sleep through all of january to catch up after the holiday season craze.

mary clare chose monogrammed notecards with a cute and simple border in a pink and green palette...and we lined the envelopes in a fabulous floral pattern.  i love how light and fresh these turned out - like a big bay window in the form of notecards!

so for today's giveaway, let's do a set of 12 foldover cards - with lined envelopes, of course!  since the topic of the day is moving...tell me where you would live if you could live anywhere in the world...money, jobs and family not being issues.  i'll announce the winner on monday, so leave your comment by sunday!

my answer - beaufort, south carolina with santa barbara, california being a close second (it does have all those wineries however, hmm).  have y'all been to beaufort?  it is just the cutest little town.  such charm and nice people, beautiful homes, a thriving artist community, an adorable downtown and the beach is right there.  we spent a few afternoons there while vacationing at fripp island this summer and fell in love with two things:  a restaurant called wren and the old homes by the bay in the historic district.  the big chill house is one of them, and don't think we didn't stalk it.  the current owners have copious amounts of shrubbery, greenery, gates, trees and anything else you could think of to deter lookers, but we caught a few glimpses.  here it is in the light of day...

other houses, if forced, i could reside in in beaufort.

ok - your turn! and good luck!!
xoxo

  1. You picked a good city to lead with...I'd also say Beaufort (#1) and Kiawah Island or St. Simons (tie for the #2 spot). Love the smell of pluff mud...

  2. I'm torn between somewhere with endless picturesque, serene landscapes (i.e. Vancouver Island or Iceland) or islands in Greece or Italy with so much culture (and delicious food) all around! Can I pick to live a 1/2 'n 1/2 life? :)

  3. I would live in NYC at a fabulous hotel like the Plaza or Waldorf Astoria- like a grown up version of Eloise. I would never have to change sheets, do laundry, or empty a dishwasher. And would get my hair and makeup done everyday. My second choice would be anywhere else where this would be possible!!

  4. I would live next to Ina and Jeffrey in the Hamptons during the summer months and do my best to get invited over for every single meal, and then I would winter in St Barts and maybe Telluride to enjoy sand and snow:) And I would visit you in Beaufort all the time so we could eat lunch and dinner at Wren. MMMMM.

  6. I think in an imaginary world where I am able to live without niceties and cold Diet Cokes....Kigali, Rwanda. Still the most special place on Earth for me. Sad I won't be going back any this year, not with this baby on the way...

2nd place is Lanai Island in Hawaii. Bman and I established, on our honeymoon, that there is no attorney on the entire island. So, b can handle wills and estates while I learn how to make turtle shell jewelry and frolick bra-less on the island...

  7. St Simons!! There is nowhere on Earth like that place, and it is close enough to my parents and sis in PVB =)

  8. It would still have to be in the South. I am a southern girl at heart, always and forever! Have lived and traveled to many places, but always come home. Do love Cumberland Island though. Anywhere near the water. Savannah, Charleson are good too. Peggy Fisher

  9. Montecito, California (not too far from Santa Barbara)--the most peaceful and beautiful beach town I've ever been to! Can walk/bike everywhere, friendly people, amazing restaurants and 70s and sunny in January.

  10. Dave and I keep saying that owning a B&B on the Island of Culebra off the coast of Puerto Rico would be awesome. It is exotic, active, and you are still in the US.
Can you imagine how tan I would be year round. I guess the only negative is hurricanes, but I would run the risk.
I will also say that I am very very much digging San Diego right now! :) and it's proximity to Temecula does not hurt...
Good luck with everything on the house, and if it is meant to be it will happen. <3

  13. Mykonos, Greece. My sister and I fell in love with that town when we visited there a few years ago. Gorgeous beaches, white washed homes, and Greek food. Yes please!

  16. Honestly, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else but Athens. IF I had to move I would go back to NYC...but this time I would be ridiculously wealthy (this way I could fly back to Athens anytime I want).

  17. Goodness. The list is long - Marseille, Park City, Utah, NYC, Nantucket, Prince Edward Island, Bruges, Belgium, Kauai...I've found it's more about who you are with...and not so much where you are.

    Fingers crossed about the house!

  19. Ok Callie, this is too weird... i am obsessed with beaufort, sc too. it is just too beautiful!!!! there are some cute shops there as well. But, in hopes of winning this contest, I won't say Beaufort, even though it's a front runner. If I could have a second house anywhere, I think the first place would be St. Simon's. Reasons being:

    (1) it's at the beach
    (2) the downtown is cute and laid back
    (3) the spanish moss
    (4) it's not far from atlanta nor is it far from savannah :o)
    (5) the big ol' southern homes

All of the above apply to Beaufort as well, mind you!!

I think I am a winner! This is Lindsay Forlines, by the way - it won't let me ID myself...

  20. I'd love a beautiful house, straight off the cover of Coastal Living, right on the water in Islamorada! Aaaah, white sand, beautiful beaches, great weather year round . . . what could be better?!?!?

Wishing you the best of luck on the house . . . keep me posted!

  21. I've always wanted to live in the deep, deep South...the delta of Mississippi. I'd want to live on an old plantation where there was just my property as far as the eye could see. It would just be The Pants, Dosie Belle, and me and whatever little munchkins we have in the future and our many animals: chickens, goats, a dairy cow, a pig, perhaps some peacocks, most definitely a pond with lots of ducks. I'd want a cheese/wine/root cellar which I would populate with cheese I make from my goats and cow, wine my husband ("the Pants") would make with our fruits, and a plethora of canned goods I canned from our organic garden. That would be the life...

  22. Oh this is an easy one .... I would live in the attic of the Chi Omega house in Athens, Georgia (at 324 Milledge Avenue, to be exact .... wait, that IS the correct address, yes??) with none other than Callie Whack and an iron. CAN.YOU.SAY.BLISS.

  23. LOL on Marcy's comment. I'd say Charleston. Ben and I took MC there on a trip when she was 1 month old and I had forgotten how cute and fun it is. House on the battery- beaches at the ready- good shopping, fun food, and Aunt Callie in-state. ;)
